The Windows Server 2022 Datacenter 32 core license is for the servers that do the heavy lifting in a virtualized environment: dual-processor hosts with 24 to 32 physical cores, or single-socket machines with a 32-core CPU. It licenses every one of those cores for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter in one purchase and gives the host unlimited Windows Server virtual machines. Delivery is by email: a genuine product key, the official Microsoft download link and our guide, all for a one-time payment.
Large hosts are where licensing mistakes get expensive. A 32-core server licensed for only 16 cores is out of compliance however few VMs it runs, and stacking Standard licenses across that many cores adds up quickly. This product covers the whole machine and takes VM counting out of the equation.
It is the right choice when two conditions meet: the host has more than 16 physical cores, and it runs, or soon will run, more than two Windows Server VMs. Typical examples:
If the host only needs one or two Windows Server VMs, the Windows Server 2022 Standard 32 Core license covers the same 32 cores with two VMs.
Licensing follows the physical cores of the host, with at least 8 per processor and 16 per server. Virtual CPUs given to VMs and hyper-threaded logical processors do not count. Find your configuration below:
| Processors | Physical cores | Datacenter license to buy |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × 16-core or 2 × 8-core | 16 | Datacenter 16 Core |
| 2 × 10-core | 20 | Datacenter 32 Core |
| 2 × 12-core | 24 | Datacenter 32 Core |
| 2 × 16-core | 32 | Datacenter 32 Core |
| 1 × 32-core | 32 | Datacenter 32 Core |
| 2 × 24-core | 48 | Datacenter 32 Core + Datacenter 16 Core |
| 2 × 32-core | 64 | Two Datacenter 32 Core licenses |
To use Datacenter’s unlimited VM rights, all physical cores on the host must be licensed with Datacenter; topping up the total with Standard core licenses does not work.
A common reason to buy this license is retiring a rack of older Windows Server machines. Each of those boxes needed its own license; once their workloads run as VMs on a single 32-core Datacenter host, the host license covers every Windows Server guest. Windows Server 2022 includes Storage Migration Service, managed from Windows Admin Center, to move file server shares, permissions and identities to new VMs. Guests that run a release already past end of support, such as 2012 R2, are best rebuilt on a supported version during the move rather than carried across unchanged.
| Standard 32 Core | Datacenter 32 Core | |
|---|---|---|
| Physical cores covered | Up to 32 | Up to 32 |
| Windows Server VMs on the host | 2 (license all 32 cores again for each extra 2) | Unlimited |
| Hyper-V isolated containers | 2 | Unlimited |

| Storage Replica | One partnership, single volume up to 2 TB | Unlimited |

On a 32-core host, every additional pair of Windows Server VMs under Standard means licensing all 32 cores again. Weigh the price at the top of this page against the Standard 32 Core listing and your expected VM count; the more the host is used as a real virtualization platform, the stronger the case for Datacenter. Our Standard vs Datacenter guide has worked examples.
They need to be activated, but they do not need separately purchased licenses when the host is fully licensed with Datacenter. The simplest route is Automatic Virtual Machine Activation: install Microsoft’s published AVMA key in each Windows Server guest, keep the Data Exchange integration service turned on, and the guests activate against the Datacenter host. On a 2022 host, AVMA supports Windows Server 2022, 2019, 2016 and 2012 R2 guests, and the host keeps activation records for each VM, which helps when you track dozens of them.
Processor core counts keep rising, and a dual-socket server with two 24-core or 32-core CPUs is now common. Datacenter licensing scales the same way: cover every physical core with Datacenter licenses, combining this 32 core license with a 16 core license for 48 cores, or using two 32 core licenses for 64 cores. Once all cores are covered, the host still gets unlimited Windows Server VMs, with no extra license for the VM count. Unsure of your total? Task Manager’s Performance › CPU page shows the number of physical cores separately from logical processors.
Both are sound choices; the deciding factors are support dates and application certification. For Windows Server 2022, mainstream support closes on October 13, 2026, and extended support with security fixes runs to October 14, 2031. Windows Server 2025 stays in mainstream support until November 14, 2029 and in extended support until November 15, 2034. If your workloads, backup software and line-of-business applications are certified for 2022, or your existing cluster nodes run 2022, this license keeps the estate consistent. The 32 core license covers the host and unlimited Windows Server guests, but user access is licensed separately and exactly as it is for Standard. Plan a Windows Server CAL for each user or device that connects to any Windows Server instance on the host. For RDS farms, every person who signs in to a Remote Desktop session also needs an RDS CAL of version 2022 or later, such as the Windows Server 2022 RDS CAL 50 user pack or the Windows Server 2025 RDS CAL pack. No. The Windows Server 2022 Datacenter 32 core license is perpetual: you pay once and the host stays licensed for that version for as long as you run it. What ends is Microsoft’s support schedule, not your right to use the software. Future versions are not included, so moving the host to Windows Server 2025 later would need a new license.

Activation went through on the first try. Paying and getting my order confirmed took no time at all. I’ll keep this short, it just worked. This won me over as a repeat customer.
Super happy with how this turned out. This was way cheaper than I expected and still fully legit. I ran the installer and just followed the prompts, no issues. This is now my default option for licenses like this.
Getting it installed was about as simple as it gets. Checking out was straightforward with no weird extra steps. This was a quick and painless purchase. Definitely worth it.
My coworker recommended this and now I get why. No reboot loops or weird error codes, it just activated. Can’t complain, this is exactly how it should work.
Everything activated cleanly and started working right away. The code showed up in my inbox faster than I expected. My old license expired and this replacement was seamless. No regrets at all with this purchase.
