This listing is a single license key that adds 50 Remote Desktop Services Per User CALs for Windows Server 2022 to your RD Licensing server. Once the key is installed in RD Licensing Manager, fifty named people can sign in to your Remote Desktop Session Host and work in full desktops or published RemoteApp programs. The CALs are perpetual: you pay once, and the pack stays valid for as long as you run Windows Server 2022 or an older RDS host.
It is aimed at offices that already run, or are about to deploy, a Windows Server 2022 terminal server: an accounting firm putting its line-of-business software on one server, a clinic giving reception and back-office staff the same desktop from any PC, or a company replacing a fleet of aging workstations with thin clients. The delivery email contains the CAL key and our installation guide, and our team helps if the Install Licenses wizard gives you trouble.
An RDS CAL (Remote Desktop Services client access license) is the permission a person or device needs to use a Windows Server desktop or application remotely through the Remote Desktop Session Host role. Before Windows Server 2008 R2 the same thing was called a Terminal Services CAL, which is why many admins still search for “terminal server CALs”. Windows Server ships with the RDS roles built in, but it does not ship with RDS CALs: a new deployment runs on a 120-day grace period, and after that the session host stops accepting user connections until it can reach a license server holding valid CALs.
CALs come in two types, Per User and Per Device. This pack is Per User, which suits most modern offices because people move between a desktop, a laptop and sometimes a home computer. Our article on RDS CALs explained goes deeper into how the licensing server, the session host and the CAL types fit together.
Yes. Remote Desktop users need two client access licenses each, plus a licensed server. The table shows the three layers and which one this product covers.
| License layer | What it licenses | Covered by this pack? |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Server 2022 license | The server OS itself, licensed by physical cores | No, see Windows Server 2022 Standard or Datacenter |
| Windows Server CAL (user or device) | Basic access to the server: file shares, authentication, printing | No, licensed separately |
| RDS CAL (Per User) | Remote Desktop sessions and RemoteApp on the session host | ✔ Yes, 50 users |
So if 50 employees log on to a Windows Server 2022 terminal server, the server needs its core licenses, each employee needs a Windows Server CAL, and each employee needs an RDS CAL from this pack. The RDS CAL never replaces the Windows Server CAL. Our guide to Windows Server CALs explains the base CAL in detail, including when a device CAL is the cheaper choice.
Per User RDS CALs are not concurrent licenses. Each of the 50 CALs is assigned to one specific person, and that person may connect from as many devices as they like. Fifty CALs therefore cover fifty named employees, not fifty simultaneous sessions shared among a larger team. If you have 70 staff who only ever log in a few at a time, you still need 70 Per User CALs, or Per Device CALs for the devices they share.
| Question | Per User CAL (this pack) | Per Device CAL |
|---|---|---|
| Licenses | One named person | One physical device |
| Best when | Staff use several devices or work from home | Shift workers share a few fixed terminals |
| Thin clients and kiosks | Covered through the user | Each terminal needs its own CAL |
| Tracked by | User account | Device, issued by the license server |
Yes. An RDS CAL must be the same version as the RD Session Host or newer. Windows Server 2022 RDS CALs therefore license users on Windows Server 2022, 2019 and 2016 session hosts, but they do not cover a Windows Server 2025 host. One more rule matters during installation: the RD Licensing server that holds these CALs must itself run Windows Server 2022 or later.
| RD Session Host version | Windows Server 2022 RDS CAL | Windows Server 2025 RDS CAL |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Server 2016 | ✔ | ✔ |
| Windows Server 2019 | ✔ | ✔ |
| Windows Server 2022 | ✔ | ✔ |
| Windows Server 2025 | — | ✔ |
If you are planning a move to Windows Server 2025 within the life of this deployment, buying the Windows Server 2025 RDS 50 User CAL pack now saves you a second purchase later, because those CALs also serve your current 2022 hosts. For a pure 2022 or mixed 2019/2022 farm, this 2022 pack is the precise fit. Our Windows Server 2019 vs 2022 vs 2025 comparison can help you decide which server generation to standardize on.
No. These are perpetual licenses with a one-time payment and no annual renewal. After installation, RD Licensing Manager lists 50 Per User CALs for Windows Server 2022, and they remain valid permanently. “Lifetime” here means lifetime for the 2022 CAL version: the pack keeps licensing 2022 and older hosts, but it does not turn into 2025 CALs when you upgrade your session hosts. You can always add a second pack later if your headcount grows, and RD Licensing Manager simply adds the new CALs to the existing total.
Honesty matters for a purchase you expect to keep for years. Windows Server 2022 leaves mainstream support on October 13, 2026 and then receives security updates under extended support until October 14, 2031. Your CALs stay valid after either date, because they license access rather than updates. For a session host you intend to run past 2031, plan the move to Windows Server 2025, which Microsoft supports until November 15, 2034.
Only for administration. Windows Server allows two simultaneous Remote Desktop connections for managing the server without any RDS CALs. As soon as ordinary users log in to do their daily work through the Remote Desktop Session Host role, every one of them needs an RDS CAL. In a workgroup (non-domain) setup, the license server does not enforce Per User CALs, but the licensing requirement still applies, so an unenforced deployment is not a compliant one.
Microsoft sells RDS CALs through volume licensing programs and partners, and prices vary by channel and quantity. You will find the price of this 50 user pack at the top of this page; it covers email delivery, the installation guide and free help with the Install Licenses wizard. Because CALs are a one-time cost, the per-user price of a terminal server deployment drops every year you keep it running, which is one reason many small businesses still prefer an on-premises RDS farm to per-user monthly cloud desktops.
It is, as long as the seller stands behind the licenses after the sale. The company behind Kymakers is Makers Unity LLC, a Microsoft partner, and every CAL order is covered by our 180-day refund on keys that have not been redeemed, a free replacement should a key ever stop working through no fault of yours, and installation support whenever you reply to the delivery email. Still deciding? Our guides cover Windows Server 2022 end of life and Windows Server 2025 licensing explained.
There is nothing to download: the RD Licensing role is part of Windows Server. Your email contains the CAL key and our guide, and the steps below take about ten minutes.
If the wizard rejects the key, check that the license server runs Windows Server 2022 or later and that the server was activated first. A session host still in its grace period, or showing “no Remote Desktop license server available”, usually has the wrong licensing mode or no license server configured. Microsoft’s RDS client access license documentation covers each setting, and our article on RDS CALs explains the licensing model. If the CALs still refuse to install, answer your delivery email and our team will finish the setup with you.

Good value, even with the small delay I ran into. Paying and getting my order confirmed took no time at all. Still satisfied with the purchase overall.
Set this up on a Friday night and had zero issues. You really can’t beat this price for a genuine license. No confusing jargon, just simple step by step directions. Would recommend this to friends without hesitation.
My IT-averse brain expected way more trouble than I got. Great value for money, especially compared to buying it retail. Five stars, easy decision.
Bought this after months of putting off an upgrade, no regrets. Windows Server 2022 RDS CAL was exactly what my setup needed, nothing more, nothing less. The key landed in my inbox within minutes of paying. This is now my default option for licenses like this.
I was replacing an expired license and this made it painless. Paying and getting my order confirmed took no time at all. This was way cheaper than I expected and still fully legit. The setup process was straightforward from start to finish. Support got back to me the same day and solved my problem. Ending on a high note, this was worth every penny.
