This page sells one genuine Windows Server 2022 Standard product key: the 25-character key that activates the Standard edition of Microsoft’s 2022 server operating system on one physical server. We sell it as a standard 16-core server license, which is the minimum Microsoft requires for any server and covers a machine with up to 16 physical cores. The key arrives by email with the official Microsoft download link and our step-by-step guide, and you pay once. There is no annual renewal and no monthly charge for the operating system itself.
Most buyers use it in one of three situations: building a first server for a small office, replacing an aging Windows Server 2012 R2 or 2016 machine, or making a server that was installed from Microsoft’s free 180-day evaluation permanent. The same key handles all three, and activation runs against Microsoft’s own activation servers.
Windows Server 2022 Standard is the general-purpose edition of Windows Server 2022, aimed at physical servers and lightly virtualized hosts. It contains every core server role, so one machine can run the whole network of a small business:
Because every role is included, the real limit of Standard is virtualization, not features. If your plan involves more than two Windows Server VMs on one host, read the Standard vs Datacenter section below before you order.
No. Microsoft offers a free 180-day evaluation of Windows Server 2022 through its Evaluation Center, but it is intended for testing. Once the evaluation period runs out, the server displays licensing warnings and starts shutting itself down every hour, which no production system can tolerate. A purchased product key is what turns that same installation into a properly licensed server, and you do not have to reinstall anything to apply it.
Plenty of admins build and test a server on the evaluation first. To keep that work, convert the evaluation in place. Open an elevated Command Prompt and check the current edition with DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition; an evaluation reports itself as ServerStandardEval. Then run DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula with your key, allow the restart (sometimes two) and confirm the license state with slmgr /dlv.
One limitation is worth knowing before you begin: Microsoft does not support converting an evaluation copy that has already been promoted to a domain controller. Either convert first and install Active Directory afterwards, or add a second domain controller on a licensed server, move the roles across and demote the evaluation machine. The full sequence is in our Windows Server 2022 Standard installation guide.
Windows Server 2022 is licensed per physical core, with a minimum of 8 cores per processor and 16 cores per server. This key is sold as a standard 16-core server license, so it fully covers servers with up to 16 physical cores and grants the Standard edition’s virtualization rights on that host:
| Your server | Physical cores | Covered by this key? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 CPU with 4 to 16 cores | 16 or fewer (counted as 16) | Yes |
| 2 CPUs with 8 cores each | 16 | Yes |
| 2 CPUs with 12 cores each | 24 | No, choose Standard 32 Core |
| 2 CPUs with 16 cores each | 32 | No, choose Standard 32 Core |
Need the core count spelled out for an asset register or an audit file? The Windows Server 2022 Standard 16 Core license is listed by core count, and the Standard 32 Core license covers dual-processor hosts with up to 32 cores.
| Feature | Standard | Datacenter |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Server VMs per licensed host | 2 | Unlimited |
| Core roles (AD DS, DNS, file, IIS, Hyper-V) | ✔ | ✔ |
| Storage Spaces Direct and software-defined networking | — | ✔ |
| Shielded VMs (Host Guardian Service) | — | ✔ |
| Storage Replica | One partnership, one volume up to 2 TB | Unlimited |
| Automatic VM Activation host | — | ✔ |
| Best for | Physical servers, small offices, up to 2 VMs | Virtualization hosts and private clouds |
For one physical server with a couple of VMs, Standard is the sensible choice. Once you expect to run many Windows Server VMs on a single host, the Windows Server 2022 Datacenter key removes the VM limit entirely. Our article on Windows Server Standard vs Datacenter explains how to find the break-even point for your own setup.
| Version | Mainstream support | Extended support | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Server 2019 | Ended Jan 9, 2024 | Jan 9, 2029 | Existing 2019 estates and older app certifications |
| Windows Server 2022 | Oct 13, 2026 | Oct 14, 2031 | Proven platform with broad vendor support |
| Windows Server 2025 | Nov 14, 2029 | Nov 15, 2034 | New builds that want the longest runway |
Windows Server 2022 is the mature middle option. Its mainstream support ends on October 13, 2026, so it receives no new features after that date, but Microsoft keeps shipping security updates under extended support until October 14, 2031. That makes it a solid pick when an application vendor certifies 2022 but not yet 2025, or when you want the same version as the rest of your servers. Starting from scratch and want the longest support window? Compare the Windows Server 2025 Standard key. Our guide to Windows Server 2019 vs 2022 vs 2025 covers the feature differences.
| Component | Microsoft minimum | Practical for a small office server |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 1.4 GHz 64-bit with NX/DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, PrefetchW and SLAT | Current server CPU with 8 to 16 cores |
| Memory | 512 MB (Server Core), 2 GB (Desktop Experience) | 16 to 32 GB ECC, more for VMs |
| Storage | 32 GB | Mirrored SSDs for the OS plus a separate data volume |
| Network | Gigabit Ethernet adapter | Two 1 or 10 Gbps adapters |
| Firmware | UEFI, Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 for secured-core features | Same, enabled in firmware |
The minimums only let Setup run. Size memory for every VM you plan to host, since each guest takes its own share of RAM.
Yes, in most business setups. The product key licenses the server itself, while every user or device that connects to it for services such as file shares, sign-in or printing needs a Windows Server Client Access License (CAL), bought separately. If staff will also work in desktops or apps through Remote Desktop Services, each of them needs an RDS CAL on top of the Windows Server CAL, and the RDS CAL version must match or exceed the server version. Two simultaneous administrator connections over Remote Desktop are allowed without RDS CALs. Read Windows Server CALs explained and RDS CALs explained, or add the Windows Server 2022 RDS CAL 50 user pack.
Lifetime here means a perpetual license for Windows Server 2022: one payment, and the server stays licensed for as long as you run that version. It does not expire after a year and it is not a subscription. It also does not include upgrades to later releases such as Windows Server 2025, so moving to a newer version in the future means buying a new license. Monthly cumulative and security updates keep installing as normal for the whole support period.
It is safe when the seller is accountable: check for a registered company behind the store, refund terms in writing and people who will help you activate. Kymakers, the store behind this listing, is operated by Makers Unity LLC, a Microsoft partner. Every order is covered by a 180-day refund on unredeemed keys, a free replacement if a key stops working through no fault of yours, and free activation support when you reply to the delivery email. The download link and key showed up in my email really fast. Installation and activation took maybe 10 minutes total. Support team was helpful when I had a quick question before buying. Will definitely come back when I need another licence.
Very happy with how this went. Honestly great value compared to buying from Microsoft directly. Everything works exactly as expected. Would buy from kymakers again.
