| VM rights | Unlimited Windows Server VMs on the licensed host |
| License term | Lifetime, one-time payment |
| Works for | VM-dense hosts, HCI cluster nodes, branch sites |
| Activation | Settings, slmgr or DISM; AVMA for guests |
| Delivery | By email, usually within minutes |
The Windows Server 2022 Datacenter 16 core license gives a server with up to 16 physical cores the full Datacenter edition, including the right to run unlimited Windows Server virtual machines on that host. It fits single-processor servers and dual 8-core machines that carry more VMs than Standard allows, as well as the nodes of small hyperconverged clusters. You receive a genuine product key by email with the official Microsoft download link and our install guide, and you pay once.
Choosing a 16-core Datacenter license is about density rather than size. A modern single-socket server with plenty of RAM can host many light Windows Server VMs, and with Datacenter every one of them is covered on that host without extra licenses.
As many Windows Server VMs as the hardware can support. The license sets no number; the practical limits are RAM, storage performance and CPU headroom. Licensing is calculated on the host’s 16 physical cores, not on the virtual processors you assign, so you can allocate vCPUs as generously as your workloads allow without buying anything extra. Linux guests run alongside Windows Server guests and need no Windows Server license.
With the license no longer the constraint, hardware becomes the planning question. Memory is usually the first limit, because every VM needs its own RAM while CPU time is shared, so add up the memory of each guest and leave room for the host. Fast SSD or NVMe storage keeps many small VMs responsive when they boot or patch at the same time. In a two-node cluster, size each node so it can carry all of the VMs if its partner fails; with Datacenter on both nodes, that failover needs no extra licensing.
Standard includes two Windows Server VMs and requires the host’s 16 cores to be licensed again for every additional pair. Datacenter covers the host once. Here is how the license count grows on the same 16-core server:
| Windows Server VMs | Standard 16 Core licenses needed | Datacenter 16 Core licenses needed |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 | 1 |
| 4 | 2 | 1 |
| 6 | 3 | 1 |
| 10 | 5 | 1 |
| 20 | 10 | 1 |

Beyond the arithmetic, Datacenter adds flexibility: you can add VMs next month without revisiting the license. Our Windows Server Standard vs Datacenter article covers more scenarios, and the general Windows Server 2022 Datacenter page summarizes the edition.
Microsoft’s core rules apply to Datacenter exactly as they do to Standard: license every physical core, with at least 8 per processor and 16 per server. This product therefore covers:
Hosts with more than 16 physical cores need more coverage; the Windows Server 2022 Datacenter 32 Core license is the one-step option for dual-processor servers up to 32 cores. Hyper-threading does not count toward the total.
Windows Server licenses are assigned to physical servers, and VMs take their rights from the host they run on. In a failover cluster a VM can live-migrate to any node, so each node needs enough license coverage for the Windows Server VMs it may run. With Datacenter on every node that question disappears, because each host is covered for unlimited guests. Storage Spaces Direct adds a firm rule of its own: every server in an S2D cluster must run Datacenter, so a two-node cluster of 16-core servers needs two of these licenses.
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor | 64-bit, 1.4 GHz or faster, with SLAT (Intel EPT or AMD NPT) for Hyper-V |
| Memory | 512 MB for Server Core, 2 GB with Desktop Experience; ECC recommended for hosts |
| Storage | 32 GB minimum for the OS; separate drives for VMs or Storage Spaces Direct |
| Network | 1 Gbps minimum; 10 Gbps or faster for S2D and live migration |
| Security hardware | TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot for secured-core and TPM-attested guarded hosts |
Not as a commercial hosting service. Datacenter covers the VMs your own organization runs, however many there are. If you rent Windows Server VMs or hosted desktops to outside customers, Microsoft licenses that through its Services Provider License Agreement (SPLA) instead. Managed service providers who look after servers owned by their clients can still license each client’s hardware with that client’s own Datacenter license.
Windows Server 2022 leaves mainstream support on October 13, 2026 and stays in extended support, with monthly security updates, until October 14, 2031. That is a sound horizon for most hosts bought today, especially when the rest of your cluster already runs 2022 and you want every node on the same version. Starting a cluster from scratch? The Windows Server 2025 Datacenter 16 Core license stays supported until November 15, 2034. Windows Server 2019 vs 2022 vs 2025 compares the releases feature by feature.
Yes. The Datacenter license covers the host and its VMs, not the people using them. Each user or device that accesses any Windows Server instance on the host needs a Windows Server CAL, and staff working through Remote Desktop Services also need RDS CALs at the same version or newer. Read Windows Server CALs explained and what RDS CALs cover before you size your order.
The license is perpetual for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter on up to 16 cores: one payment, no expiry and no subscription, although future versions are not included. Kymakers, which sells this 16 core Datacenter license, is run by Makers Unity LLC, a Microsoft partner. You also get a 180-day refund window on unredeemed keys, free replacement should a key fail through no fault of yours, and free help with activation. I was replacing a cracked trial version and this fixed everything. Everything activated cleanly and started working right away. Simple as that, would buy again.
Activation was smooth, no popups or errors to deal with. Paying this little for a real license felt almost too good to be true. First time buying a key online and it went great. No regrets at all with this purchase.
Wasn’t sure what to expect but it turned out perfect. On top of that, there was no bloatware or extra junk bundled with the install, and checking out was straightforward with no weird extra steps. The Windows Server 2022 Datacenter (16-Core) key worked exactly as described. Already planning to come back for my next license.
I was cautious buying a license from a third party but it turned out great. The setup process was straightforward from start to finish. Highly recommend to anyone looking for the same thing.
Ordered late at night and still had everything working before bed. Support got back to me the same day and solved my problem. The guide answered every question I had before I even asked it. Great value for money, especially compared to buying it retail. It worked perfectly with my existing setup. Switched over to Windows Server 2022 Datacenter (16-Core) and haven’t looked back. Ending on a high note, this was worth every penny.
