For everyday writing, yes: the ribbon, styles, review tools and file format match, and a document moves between the two without changes. A few differences remain. Windows-only COM add-ins and ActiveX form controls do not run on macOS, and VBA macros that call Windows system functions need adjusting, although most ordinary macros work. Some fonts that ship with Windows are not installed on a Mac by default, so a shared document may substitute a font unless both computers have it. Licenses are tied to a platform: a Mac key does not activate Word on Windows, and Windows products such as Office 2024 Pro Plus do not install on macOS. On an older macOS, an installed Word keeps working but stops receiving updates, and the current installer may refuse to run at all. Microsoft links Word for Mac to your Microsoft account before you can download it, so setup has three short stages. Allow about 15 minutes and keep your Mac’s admin password handy.
If the installer will not start, check that your macOS is one Microsoft still supports and update it through System Settings › General › Software Update. If Word says it is unlicensed, sign out of Word and back in with the account that redeemed the key; an old Microsoft 365 login is a common culprit. When setup.office.com reports that the key was already used, it may be linked to another of your Microsoft accounts.
