The documents themselves are interchangeable, since both versions use the same .docx format. The real difference is time: Word 2021 loses Microsoft support in October 2026, so buying Word 2024 today gives you three more years of security fixes. Word for the web runs free in a browser with a Microsoft account, but it lacks many desktop tools, for example advanced layout options, mail merge and VBA macros, and it needs an internet connection. The Word desktop app is paid, either through a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time license like this one. A perpetual Word 2024 license makes sense if you write often, work offline or simply want to stop paying every year.

Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft support in October 2025. Word 2024 still installs on it, but a Windows 11 PC is the safer long-term home for your documents. To check what you run, open Settings › System › About, where the Windows specifications section shows the edition and version.
It means the license never expires. Word 2024 stays activated on the PC where you first enter the key, through Windows updates and reinstalls, with no renewal. It does not include the next major version, so when Microsoft ships a successor to Word 2024, upgrading is a new purchase. Until October 9, 2029, Microsoft delivers security and stability fixes; after that date Word continues to run, only without them. Replacing the computer itself is different: a brand-new PC needs its own key.
