A Visual Studio Professional license gives one developer the right to use Microsoft’s professional IDE for commercial work of any size. This product is a genuine product key for Visual Studio Professional 2026. You download Visual Studio 2026 from Microsoft, install the Professional edition, and unlock it permanently by entering the key under Help › Register Visual Studio. It matches the way Microsoft itself now sells Professional 2026: as a standalone, one-time purchase rather than a subscription.
Because it is a standalone license, it covers the IDE and nothing else. There are no monthly fees and no renewal date, and you keep every Visual Studio 2026 update Microsoft ships. Subscription extras such as Azure credits, training offers and the subscriber software library are not part of it. For most freelancers and development teams that is exactly the point: they want a capable IDE they own, not a bundle of services they never use.
Visual Studio 2026 is the first major release since Visual Studio 2022, and Microsoft rebuilt much of the experience around speed and AI assistance:
Visual Studio Community is free, but only within its license terms. Individual developers may use it for any project, including paid work, and it is also free for open-source contributions, academic research and classroom learning. Inside an organization, up to five users may use Community, unless the organization is an “enterprise” in Microsoft’s terms: more than 250 PCs or users, or more than one million US dollars in annual revenue. Enterprises may not use Community at all beyond open source, research and education.
So if you are a developer at a growing company, an agency with more than five coders, or anyone inside an enterprise-sized organization, you need a paid edition. Visual Studio Professional is the standard answer for those teams.

Professional contains the full editor, debugger, profiler, designers and Git integration that most developers use every day. If your team depends on historical debugging with IntelliTrace or continuous testing with Live Unit Testing, the Visual Studio Enterprise 2026 key adds those tools on top.
Yes. Professional and Enterprise run as a time-limited trial until they are licensed. There are two ways to license them: signing in with an account that holds a Visual Studio subscription, or entering a product key. With this purchase you use the second route. Open Help › Register Visual Studio, choose Unlock with a Product Key, paste the key and apply it. Signing in with a Microsoft account is still useful for syncing settings and for Copilot, but it is not what licenses Professional here.
Yes. The applications, libraries and services you build are your own work, and Visual Studio Professional is licensed for commercial development. You can sell what you create, deploy it for clients or run it in production. The only licensing question is which edition each developer may use, which is why companies buy Professional instead of relying on Community.
Visual Studio is licensed per user, not per device. The developer this license is assigned to may install it on the computers they use for their own development work, for example an office desktop and a laptop. A second developer needs a second license, even if they share a machine with the first.

Microsoft publishes the exact list of supported Windows versions on its Visual Studio 2026 requirements page. If you plan to use Hyper-V, containers or device emulators, Windows 11 Pro gives you the virtualization features that Home lacks, as our Windows 11 Home vs Pro guide explains. For heavy C++ builds on workstation hardware, consider Windows 11 Pro for Workstations.
Most of what makes Visual Studio look expensive is the subscription bundle, which adds cloud credits, training and a library of Microsoft software for development and testing, and renews every year. A standalone Professional license strips that back to the IDE itself. You pay once (see the price at the top of this page) and there is nothing to renew. If you only need Visual Studio to write, debug and ship code, that is usually the lower total cost over the life of the 2026 release.
Lifetime means the license never expires for Visual Studio Professional 2026. Every update Microsoft releases for the 2026 version, including new features, fixes and security patches, installs through the Visual Studio Installer at no cost. A future major version of Visual Studio is not included and would need a new license. The 2026 IDE keeps working indefinitely on the machines you install it on.
It is when you buy from a seller that stays accountable after the sale. Makers Unity LLC, a Microsoft partner, operates Kymakers, and your Visual Studio order includes a 180-day refund while the key is unredeemed, a free replacement should the key stop working through no fault of yours, and support by reply to your delivery email. Our article on buying low-cost Microsoft keys safely lists what to check before you pay anywhere.

Need a database for your projects? SQL Server 2022 Standard is licensed for production. All editions are listed in our Visual Studio category, and you can find out how ordering works before you buy.
Still deciding? Our guide covers Visual Studio 2026 editions compared.
Your order email brings the Visual Studio Professional 2026 key together with Microsoft’s download link and our guide. Installing and unlocking usually takes 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the workloads you choose.
A Community installation cannot be converted with a key. Open the Visual Studio Installer, go to the Available tab, install Visual Studio Professional 2026 and unlock it as in step B. Visual Studio 2022 can stay installed side by side, and your existing solutions open in 2026 without conversion.
If the key is not accepted, check that the installed product is Professional 2026; a Professional key does not unlock Enterprise, and Community never asks for one. If you do not see Unlock with a Product Key, open File › Account Settings and look for the license section there. Copilot features ask for a GitHub sign-in separately; that does not affect the Visual Studio license. Nothing working? Reply to the delivery email and we will get Visual Studio unlocked with you.
