This is a Windows 11 Pro upgrade for a computer that already runs Windows 11 Home. Instead of wiping the drive and starting over, you change the edition from inside Settings: Windows swaps the Home feature set for Pro, restarts, and your desktop returns with the same documents, programs, browser profiles and Microsoft account. The license is a one-time purchase for that one PC, with no subscription attached.
Your order email contains two codes, and each has its own job. The first is a generic upgrade key published by Microsoft. It only switches the installed edition from Home to Pro; it never activates anything by itself. The second is your own genuine Windows 11 Pro product key, which you enter once Pro is running to activate it permanently. Splitting the work this way avoids the most common edition-change failures, and the guide in the email shows each screen.
Not to an activated Pro. The generic upgrade key in your email is published openly by Microsoft, and on its own it will change the edition, but the result is an unactivated Windows 11 Pro with a watermark and locked personalization settings. Activation requires a paid Pro license, which is the second key you receive. Offers of “free Pro activation” through scripts or patched tools bypass licensing altogether, can lose activation after an update and are a common way to pick up malware.
There are four realistic ways to end up with Pro on a PC that currently runs Home, and they differ more in convenience than you might expect:

If the only goal is Pro on the computer you already own, the upgrade key is the most direct route. Pick the full Windows 11 Pro product key instead if you also expect to install Windows from scratch on another drive and want a key suited to any install method. Either way, the upgrade is a one-time cost and Pro stays activated afterwards.

Even though the upgrade keeps data in place, back up anything irreplaceable first, as you would before any system change. An edition upgrade only switches on additional components; it does not rebuild your user profile or touch your personal folders.

Yes, and you do not need a USB stick or ISO to do it. Home and Pro share the same underlying system files, so the edition switch enables extra features rather than installing a new copy of Windows. A full reinstall is only worth doing if your Home installation is damaged or you want a fresh start anyway. Still on an older version? There is no need to check the hardware again. If Windows 11 Home already runs on the machine, Pro will too, because both editions have identical system requirements.

Yes. Once the second key activates Pro, that computer holds a permanent Windows 11 Pro license with no renewal date. Reinstalling Windows 11 Pro later on the same machine reactivates it, and Windows 11 feature updates keep both the edition and the activation. Error 0xC004F050 usually means a key was mistyped or the Pro key was entered while Home was still installed: use the generic key first and the Pro key second. If the edition switch seems stuck, restart, install pending updates and repeat step 1. If Settings says “already activated” but still shows Home, re-enter the generic key under Change product key and click Start to force the edition change.
