| VM rights | 2 Windows Server VMs; stack licenses for more |
| License term | Lifetime, one-time payment |

The Windows Server 2022 Standard 16 core license covers exactly the number of physical cores Microsoft requires as a minimum for any server running Windows Server 2022. That makes it the right size for single-processor servers with up to 16 cores and for dual-processor machines fitted with two 8-core CPUs. You receive a genuine product key for Windows Server 2022 Standard by email, together with the official Microsoft download link and our activation guide, and you pay for it once.
Unlike our general Standard listing, this product is named by its core count, which is what auditors, procurement teams and managed service providers usually want to see on an invoice. The license carries the Standard edition’s virtualization rights: two Windows Server operating system environments (OSEs) on the licensed host.
Microsoft licenses Windows Server 2022 by physical processor cores, not per server or per socket. Three rules decide how many core licenses a server needs:
Applying those rules gives a simple answer for most hardware: anything up to 16 physical cores, once the minimums are applied, is covered by this one license. Virtual processors assigned to VMs do not change the count, because licensing follows the physical cores of the host.
Yes, and it is one of the most common surprises for buyers coming from older per-processor licensing. A tower server with a single 6-core CPU has six physical cores, yet Windows Server 2022 still requires 16 core licenses because of the per-server minimum. Dual-processor machines with two 4-core CPUs land in the same place: each processor counts as 8, which adds up to 16. The upside is that this one license covers all of these machines, with nothing left to calculate.
| Server configuration | Physical cores | Core licenses needed | What to buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 × 4-core CPU | 4 | 16 (server minimum) | This 16 core license |
| 1 × 8-core CPU | 8 | 16 (server minimum) | This 16 core license |
| 1 × 16-core CPU | 16 | 16 | This 16 core license |
| 2 × 6-core CPUs | 12 | 16 (8 per CPU) | This 16 core license |
| 2 × 8-core CPUs | 16 | 16 | This 16 core license |
| 1 × 24-core CPU | 24 | 24 | Standard 32 Core |
| 2 × 16-core CPUs | 32 | 32 | Standard 32 Core |
As soon as a host goes past 16 physical cores, this product is not enough on its own. The Windows Server 2022 Standard 32 Core license covers dual-processor and high-core-count hosts up to 32 cores in a single purchase.
Two Windows Server VMs on each host whose cores are all licensed. When you use both of those VM rights, the physical installation may only run Hyper-V and the tools that manage it, not other workloads. Linux guests do not count toward the two. For more Windows Server VMs on the same hardware, Microsoft allows license stacking: license all of the server’s cores again and you gain two more.
| Windows Server VMs on a 16-core host | Standard 16 core licenses needed |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | 1 |
| 3 to 4 | 2 |
| 5 to 6 | 3 |
| 7 to 8 | 4 |
| A large or growing number | Consider Datacenter 16 Core (unlimited VMs) |
Stacking works well for a handful of VMs. Beyond that, the Windows Server 2022 Datacenter 16 Core license is simpler, because one Datacenter license covers unlimited Windows Server VMs on the same 16-core host. Our Standard vs Datacenter comparison walks through the numbers.
| Standard 16 Core | Standard 32 Core | Datacenter 16 Core | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical cores covered | Up to 16 | Up to 32 | Up to 16 |
| Windows Server VMs | 2 | 2 | Unlimited |
| Storage Spaces Direct, SDN, Shielded VMs | — | — | ✔ |
| Typical server | Single CPU or 2 × 8-core | 2 × 12-core or 2 × 16-core | Single-CPU virtualization host |
If the server will only ever run a couple of VMs, Standard 16 Core is the most economical fit. For an overview of the edition itself, see the Windows Server 2022 Standard product key page.
Windows Server 2022 reaches the end of mainstream support on October 13, 2026. After that Microsoft adds no new features, but it keeps releasing security updates under extended support until October 14, 2031, which gives a server bought today about five years of patches. If your hardware refresh cycle runs longer, compare the Windows Server 2025 Standard 16 Core license, supported until November 2034. The trade-offs between releases are summarized in Windows Server 2019 vs 2022 vs 2025.
| CPU | 64-bit, 1.4 GHz or faster, with NX/DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, PrefetchW and second-level address translation (EPT or NPT) for Hyper-V |
| RAM | 512 MB for Server Core, 2 GB for Desktop Experience; ECC memory recommended |
| Disk | 32 GB minimum for the system partition |
| Network | Gigabit Ethernet adapter |
| Optional security | UEFI Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 for secured-core server |
For a two-VM host, plan memory for the host plus both guests rather than for the operating system alone.
Usually both, depending on how people use the server. A core license such as this one covers the server’s processors; it does not cover the people or devices that connect to it. Each user or device that accesses the server needs a Windows Server CAL, and anyone working in Remote Desktop Services sessions or RemoteApp also needs an RDS CAL whose version is the same as or newer than the server. Our explainers on Windows Server CALs and RDS CALs cover user versus device CALs.
The license is perpetual for Windows Server 2022 Standard on 16 cores: you pay once and it does not expire. Monthly security and quality updates install as normal for the life of the product. What it leaves out is any right to future versions, so Windows Server 2025 or later would need a new license, and it does not include CALs, RDS CALs or Software Assurance benefits.

Really glad I decided to go with this. The steps were laid out clearly so I didn’t have to guess. This is going to be my go-to from now on.
Grabbed Windows Server 2022 Standard (16-Core) for a good price and it’s working perfectly. Setting it up was easier than I thought it would be. For the price I paid this feels like a steal. Activation was smooth, no popups or errors to deal with. No complaints at all here. This won me over as a repeat customer.
This checked every box I had. Installing it took just a few minutes. This is now my default option for licenses like this.
It ran smoothly alongside everything else I already had installed. Checking out was straightforward with no weird extra steps. Kymakers made the whole process easy from checkout to activation. This got my machine back up and running faster than expected. Ending on a high note, this was worth every penny.
There was a simple guide included that walked me through activation. Paying and getting my order confirmed took no time at all. This exceeded what I was expecting for the price. Very happy customer here.
