Yes, Visio for the web runs in a browser, but it is a lighter tool than the desktop edition. It comes with the Visio Plan 1 and Plan 2 subscriptions, and a basic version is part of many Microsoft 365 work plans. The trade-off is that the 2021 release gets no new features and, after October 13, 2026, no security fixes either. Visio has never been released for macOS. If Office 2021 is already installed, pick the same 32-bit or 64-bit build for Visio, because Microsoft does not allow the two architectures side by side.
Lifetime refers to the license, not to Microsoft’s servicing. Your Visio 2021 Professional activation has no expiry date and needs no renewal, but the patch stream for the 2021 version stops on October 13, 2026. The installed app does not shut off at that point. Later Visio versions are not included, so moving to 2024 later requires a separate key.

Visio 2021 must use the same installation technology and version family as the Office on that PC. Microsoft 365 installed through Click-to-Run, Office 2024 or an MSI-based Office can make setup report that the products can’t be installed side by side. Uninstall the conflicting copy from Settings › Apps (or with the Microsoft tool explained in our SetupProd_OffScrub.exe article), install Visio 2021, then add Office 2021 back if required.
When the key is refused, the installed edition is usually different: Visio 2021 Standard, Visio 2024 or a trial. Running cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus in an administrator Command Prompt from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16 shows which licenses are present.
