Windows Server 2019 Datacenter: What You Are Buying

This listing is a genuine Windows Server 2019 Datacenter product key: a perpetual license for the virtualization edition of Windows Server 2019. When all physical cores of a host are licensed for Datacenter, that host may run unlimited Windows Server virtual machines, and it gains the software-defined storage, networking and security features that Standard lacks. Payment is one-time; there is no subscription.

Most people who buy 2019 Datacenter today are not building something new. They are adding a node to a Hyper-V or Storage Spaces Direct cluster that already runs 2019, replacing a failed host, or licensing a workload whose vendor certifies only 2019. For those jobs, matching the existing version exactly is worth more than the newest features.

In short: a Windows Server 2019 Datacenter key from Kymakers is a lifetime license for one host with unlimited Windows Server VMs, Storage Spaces Direct, SDN, Shielded VMs and AVMA. Microsoft security updates continue until January 9, 2029, so it fits existing 2019 estates rather than brand-new long-term deployments.

Why Buy Datacenter 2019 Today?

  • Cluster consistency: failover and S2D clusters expect every node on the same Windows Server version, and mixed versions are supported only temporarily during a rolling upgrade.
  • Replacing a failed host in a 2019 estate without starting a cluster-wide upgrade project.
  • Vendor certification for software stacks validated on 2019 hosts.
  • Older server hardware that runs 2019 well but does not meet the newer CPU requirements of Windows Server 2025.

If none of these apply, a newer version will serve you longer; see Windows Server 2025 Datacenter.

What Does 2019 Datacenter Include That Standard Doesn’t?

Software-Defined Networking (Network Controller, SLB, gateways)—✔
Shielded VMs and Host Guardian Service—✔ (Linux shielded VMs new in 2019)

Need only a couple of VMs? The Windows Server 2019 Standard key does the job for less.

What Windows Server 2019 Added for Virtualization Hosts

Although it is no longer the newest release, 2019 brought several Datacenter-relevant improvements that many clusters still depend on:

  • Nested resiliency for two-node Storage Spaces Direct clusters, keeping data online even when a drive and a whole server fail at the same time.
  • Shielded VMs for Linux, extending encrypted, attested virtual machines beyond Windows guests.
  • Windows Admin Center integration for managing hyper-converged clusters from a browser.
  • Data Deduplication on ReFS volumes, which saves space on volumes that hold many similar VM files.
  • System Insights, which forecasts CPU, storage and network capacity trends on the host.

Who Should Buy Windows Server 2019 Datacenter?

  • Owners of 2019 Hyper-V clusters adding capacity or replacing a node.
  • Two-node S2D deployments in branch offices that rely on nested resiliency and want identical nodes.
  • Companies with a migration planned before 2029 that need to stay compliant on 2019 hosts until then.
  • Software vendors and integrators maintaining test labs that mirror customers’ 2019 environments.

Unlimited VMs: What It Really Means

Unlimited applies to Windows Server operating system environments on the one physical host whose cores are all licensed for Datacenter. You can run as many Windows Server 2019 guests as the hardware allows, and Linux guests need no Windows license at all. The right does not extend to a second host, and it does not cover client operating systems such as Windows 10 or 11 for VDI, which are licensed separately.

Adding a Node to an Existing 2019 Cluster

Failover clusters and Storage Spaces Direct pools are designed for nodes running the same Windows Server version, so a replacement or expansion node for a 2019 cluster should run 2019 Datacenter too. License the new node for all of its physical cores, install the same updates as the existing nodes, then run cluster validation before adding it. When you eventually move the cluster to a newer release, Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade lets you upgrade one node at a time, but each upgraded node needs a license for the new version.

Automatic VM Activation on a 2019 Host

A Windows Server 2019 Datacenter host running Hyper-V can activate Windows Server 2019, 2016 and 2012 R2 guests through AVMA. Each guest gets Microsoft’s public AVMA key for its edition and activates via the host, with no internet connection or individual key required. Newer guests such as Windows Server 2022 cannot be activated by a 2019 host.

Is Server 2019 Datacenter Still Supported?

Yes, until January 9, 2029. Mainstream support ended on January 9, 2024, so the platform now receives security updates but no new features. Plan the next refresh for an estate built on this license before that date; our guide to Windows Server 2019 end of life lists the options. Remember that a host and its guests age together: when 2019 support ends, both the Hyper-V host and any Windows Server 2019 VMs stop receiving patches, so the migration plan should cover the guests as well as the host.

Datacenter 2019 vs 2022 vs 2025

VersionSupport endsChoose it when
Windows Server 2019 DatacenterJanuary 9, 2029Extending a 2019 cluster or meeting a 2019 certification
Windows Server 2022 DatacenterOctober 14, 2031Matching 2022 hosts; Secured-core server features
Windows Server 2025 DatacenterNovember 15, 2034New hosts, GPU partitioning, hotpatching

The Server 2019 vs 2022 vs 2025 article covers what changed between the three.

Core Licensing for 2019 Datacenter

The Datacenter license is counted per physical core, exactly like Standard: at least 8 cores per processor, at least 16 per server, and every core in the host covered. A two-socket host with 10 cores per CPU therefore needs 20 core licenses. If your host has more than 16 cores, tell us your hardware before ordering and we will confirm what you need.

CALs Still Apply

Datacenter licenses the host and its VMs, not the users. Each user or device that authenticates to Windows Server needs a Windows Server CAL of version 2019 or later, and Remote Desktop users also need RDS CALs. For 2019 session hosts our Windows Server 2022 RDS CAL 50 user pack qualifies, because RDS CALs may be newer than the server as long as the RD license server runs a matching or newer version. See our Windows Server CAL explainer for the counting rules.

Host Requirements for Windows Server 2019 Datacenter

ComponentMinimumTypical virtualization host
CPU1.4 GHz 64-bit with NX/DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, PrefetchW; SLAT for Hyper-VDual-socket server processors
RAM512 MB (Core) / 2 GB (Desktop Experience)Total VM memory plus a host reserve
Storage32 GBSSD or NVMe; S2D needs local drives in each node
NetworkGigabit Ethernet10 GbE or faster with RDMA for S2D
SecurityUEFI with Secure BootTPM 2.0 for Host Guardian attestation

Lifetime License and Value

You pay once and the host remains licensed for good; there is no renewal. The license covers Windows Server 2019 only, with security updates until January 2029, and does not include rights to newer versions. For estates that will be retired or upgraded within the next couple of years, that is often the most economical way to stay compliant. The price is shown at the top of this page.

How to Download, Install and Activate Windows Server 2019 Datacenter

The Datacenter key, Microsoft’s ISO link and our guide arrive together by email. Use the route that matches your host.

A. Build the host from the Evaluation ISO and convert with DISM

  1. Download the Windows Server 2019 ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center (or take it from your volume-licensing media); it contains both Standard and Datacenter.
  2. Write the ISO to an 8 GB+ USB drive with Rufus, or mount it through the server’s out-of-band console or your hypervisor.
  3. In Setup, select Windows Server 2019 Datacenter (Server Core) or Datacenter (Desktop Experience), accept the terms, then choose Custom and the install disk.
  4. Set the Administrator password when prompted.
  5. Run DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition to confirm ServerDatacenterEval, then DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula.
  6. Restart, patch the node to the same level as the rest of your cluster, then add the Hyper-V and clustering roles. Finish the conversion before promoting any domain controller.

B. Datacenter already installed from full media

  1. Go to Settings › Update & Security › Activation › Change product key.
  2. Type the 25-character Datacenter key and select Next.
  3. Command-line route (elevated prompt): slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, then slmgr /ato.
  4. In each Windows Server 2019, 2016 or 2012 R2 guest on this Hyper-V host, install the matching AVMA key so it activates through the host.

C. When activation fails

Check that the host is Datacenter and not Standard or an unconverted evaluation, using DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition. For hosts without internet, slui 4 starts phone activation and our Get Confirmation ID tool helps with the Confirmation ID. More fixes are in our 0xC004F074 article and the key-not-working troubleshooter. Reply to your order email any time for help.

Before you buy
When will my Windows Server 2019 Datacenter key arrive?
Typically within minutes after payment, 24 hours a day. The single delivery email contains the key, the ISO link and the activation guide.
Why buy Datacenter 2019 today?
Mainly to extend or repair an existing 2019 cluster, or for software certified on 2019 hosts. For a new virtualization host, Windows Server 2025 Datacenter offers support until 2034.
Is Windows Server 2019 Datacenter still supported?
Yes. Microsoft provides security updates until January 9, 2029, while mainstream support finished in January 2024.
Unlimited VMs, really?
Yes, for Windows Server guests on the one host whose physical cores are all licensed for Datacenter. Linux guests need no Windows license, and client OS VMs are licensed separately.
Is this a genuine Datacenter license?
Yes, a genuine Microsoft product key that activates through Microsoft, sold by Makers Unity LLC, a Microsoft partner. Should it fail later through no fault of yours, you get a free replacement.
Do I need CALs?
Yes. CALs are never included with server licenses: each user or device needs a Windows Server 2019 or newer CAL, plus RDS CALs for Remote Desktop. Read our RDS CAL guide.
How does core licensing work for 2019 Datacenter?
Every physical core must be licensed, with minimums of 8 per processor and 16 per server. Tell us your CPU configuration before ordering if the host has more than 16 cores.
Install, activation & troubleshooting
Will guest VMs on a 2019 host activate on their own?
Yes on Hyper-V: Windows Server 2019, 2016 and 2012 R2 guests activate through AVMA against the 2019 Datacenter host. Windows Server 2022 or 2025 guests need a newer host or keys of their own.
Can I add this node to my existing 2019 cluster?
Yes, that is the most common use. Patch it to the same level as the other nodes, run cluster validation, then join it.
What is the upgrade path later?
You can move a 2019 cluster forward with Cluster OS Rolling Upgrade or upgrade single servers in place. Each upgraded host needs a license for the new version, such as Windows Server 2022 Datacenter.
Should a Hyper-V host run Server Core?
Usually, yes: Server Core has fewer components to patch and a smaller attack surface, and Windows Admin Center manages it remotely. The installation option is chosen during setup and cannot be changed later.
How do I turn the 2019 evaluation install into the full edition?
Run DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:your-key /AcceptEula as administrator and restart. If activation then needs a phone step, use our Get Confirmation ID tool.
What is your refund policy?
Unredeemed keys are refundable for 180 days. A working activated key cannot be refunded, but a key that stops working through no fault of yours is replaced; see the refund and returns policy.
