Office 2016 for Mac: What You Are Buying

This is a genuine Office 2016 for Mac product key for Home and Business, covering Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote on one Mac. It is the oldest and simplest Mac suite we sell, aimed at a specific machine: an Intel Mac running an older macOS that newer Office releases no longer install on. You redeem the key with a Microsoft account, download from Microsoft and pay once.

Please read this page before ordering, because Office 2016 for Mac is not a good fit for most Macs bought in the last few years. Microsoft ended its support on October 13, 2020. It was never built for Apple silicon (M1 and newer), and it was never tested on macOS 11 Big Sur or anything later. On those Macs it may refuse to install, crash or misbehave, and we would rather point you to a version that works.

In short: Office Home and Business 2016 for Mac is a lifetime, one-Mac license with commercial use, meant for older Intel Macs on macOS 10.10 Yosemite to 10.15 Catalina. Microsoft support ended on October 13, 2020, it is not native on Apple silicon and it is unreliable on recent macOS, so newer Macs should use the 2021 or 2024 suite.

Does Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac Expire?

The license does not expire. Once activated, Office 2016 keeps opening and saving documents on that Mac with no renewal. Support is a separate matter: Microsoft stopped all updates for Office 2016 for Mac on October 13, 2020, so it has now gone six years without security patches. That is the main risk to weigh, especially for Outlook, which handles incoming email every day.

The Windows edition of Office 2016 was supported until October 14, 2025, which sometimes causes confusion; the Mac edition’s support simply ended five years earlier. For background on how the Office releases and their dates line up, see Microsoft Office versions explained.

Will Office 2016 Run on My Mac?

Office 2016 for Mac was supported on macOS 10.10 Yosemite and later until its end of support in 2020, which in practice means up to macOS 10.15 Catalina. It is an Intel-only app. Use this table to decide, and check the guide if your Mac sits near a boundary:

Your MacWill Office 2016 for Mac run? What we suggest
Intel Mac on macOS 10.10 Yosemite to 10.15 CatalinaYes, this is the range it was built and tested forGood fit: this is who it is for
Intel Mac on macOS 11 Big Sur to 13 VenturaNot supported; it may install but can misbehaveOffice 2019 for Mac (check the guide)
Intel Mac on macOS 14 Sonoma or newerNot reliableOffice 2021 for Mac or Office 2024
Apple silicon Mac (M1 or newer)Not native; Rosetta only, unsupportedOffice 2024 Home and Business

Find your details under Apple menu › About This Mac: Intel Macs list an Intel processor, while Apple silicon Macs list a chip such as M1, M2 or M3. If you are unsure, read the Office 2016 for Mac guide or ask us before you buy.

Why We Do Not Recommend Office 2016 for Apple Silicon Macs

Every M-series Mac shipped with macOS Big Sur or later, which is already beyond the range Office 2016 was tested on. The 2016 apps are Intel code, so they would depend on Apple’s Rosetta 2 translation layer, an arrangement Microsoft never supported for this version. Even if it launches, you would be running unsupported software on an unsupported macOS. For these Macs the right answer is a Universal suite: Office 2021 for Mac if you need it for a fixed period, or Office 2024 Home and Business for support until 2029.

What’s Included in Office Home and Business 2016 for Mac?

  • Word 2016 for Mac for letters, reports and manuscripts, with styles, track changes and a ribbon that matches the Windows version of its day.
  • Excel 2016 for Mac with PivotTables, slicers, recommended charts and the Analysis ToolPak.
  • PowerPoint 2016 for Mac with Presenter View, transitions and an animation pane.
  • Outlook 2016 for Mac for mail, calendar and contacts; it works best with standard IMAP or POP accounts, as Microsoft no longer supports older Outlook versions on Microsoft 365 mailboxes.
  • OneNote 2016 for Mac for typed and clipped notes.

Documents use the same .docx, .xlsx and .pptx formats as current Office, so files you create open anywhere. Going the other way, files from newer versions open too, but features added after 2016, such as XLOOKUP formulas, newer chart types or real-time co-authoring, are missing or show as errors.

Can I Still Buy Office 2016, and Without a Subscription?

Yes to both. Microsoft no longer sells Office 2016, but genuine product keys like this one are still available, and they are one-time purchases with no subscription attached. You pay the price shown at the top of this page once. There are no renewal fees and, equally, no upgrades: moving to a newer version later means buying a new license.

Who Is Office 2016 for Mac Right For?

  • Owners of older Intel iMacs, MacBook Pros and Mac minis whose macOS cannot go past Catalina.
  • Offline or home-office Macs used for writing and spreadsheets, where email risk is low.
  • Anyone reopening old Office 2016 templates and macros on a legacy Mac exactly as they were built.
  • Budget buyers who know the limits and want licensed Office rather than an unlicensed copy.

Staying Safe With an Unsupported Office Suite

  • Keep macOS itself as up to date as your Mac allows.
  • Leave macros disabled unless you created the file or trust its source.
  • Preview attachments from unknown senders with Quick Look instead of opening them in Word or Excel.
  • Back up regularly with Time Machine or another backup tool.

Moving From Office 2016 to a Newer Mac Suite Later

When you eventually replace this Mac, plan on a new license rather than carrying Office 2016 across, because a new Mac will almost certainly use Apple silicon and a macOS release that Office 2016 never supported. Your documents need no conversion: copy them over and open them in Office 2021 or 2024. Outlook data is the one item to prepare. Export your mailbox to an .olm archive from the File menu in Outlook 2016 before retiring the old machine, then import that archive into Outlook on the new Mac. Templates and custom dictionaries can be copied across by hand.

How to Download, Install and Activate Office 2016 for Mac

Before you start, confirm your Mac is an Intel model on a macOS version Office 2016 supports (see the Features tab). Activation runs through a Microsoft account in three short stages.

A. Redeem the key online

  1. In a web browser, go to setup.office.com or office.com/setup.
  2. Log in with a Microsoft account; if you have none, select Create a new account.
  3. Paste the 25-character Office 2016 for Mac key from your Kymakers order email, then set your country and language.
  4. Press Next / Redeem to attach the license to your account.

B. Get the installer from your account

  1. Log in to account.microsoft.com using the account from step A.
  2. In Services & subscriptions, find Office Home and Business 2016 for Mac and choose Install.
  3. Run the downloaded .pkg file and let the installer finish, typing your Mac admin password when prompted.

C. Activate in Word

  1. Start Word 2016 from the Applications folder.
  2. Pick Sign in when asked to activate, using the same Microsoft account.
  3. After activation, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote share the license automatically.

If installation or activation fails

An error saying the app cannot be opened or is not supported usually means the Mac runs a macOS newer than Office 2016 can handle, or it uses Apple silicon; a newer suite is the fix, and an unredeemed key qualifies for our 180-day refund. Activation that keeps returning to the sign-in screen generally points to the wrong Microsoft account. See how to create a Microsoft account for account setup, and reply to your delivery email for help.

Before you buy
Will Office 2016 run on my old MacBook?
If it is an Intel MacBook on macOS 10.10 Yosemite to 10.15 Catalina, yes, that is exactly what it was built for. On newer macOS it is unsupported, so check the Office 2016 for Mac guide first.
Does Office 2016 for Mac run on Apple silicon (M1 and newer)?
Not natively. It is Intel-only software that Microsoft never supported on Apple silicon, so choose Office 2021 or 2024 for an M-series Mac.
Can I still buy Office 2016?
Yes, as a genuine product key. Microsoft no longer sells it directly.
Can I buy Office 2016 without a subscription?
Yes. It is a one-time purchase for one Mac with no recurring fees.
Does Microsoft Office 2016 expire?
The license never expires. Microsoft support for the Mac edition ended on October 13, 2020, so no further updates will come.
Why buy a 2016 suite in 2026?
For an older Intel Mac that cannot run the macOS versions newer Office requires. On any recent Mac, a newer suite is the better buy.
Can I use Office 2016 for Mac for business?
Yes. Home and Business includes commercial use rights, plus Outlook.
Is it still safe to use?
It works, but it gets no security patches. Keep macros off, be careful with attachments and keep macOS updated as far as your Mac allows.
Install, activation & troubleshooting
How do I get Office 2016 onto my Mac?
Redeem the key at setup.office.com, download the installer from Services & subscriptions at account.microsoft.com, then sign in inside Word.
Will files exchange cleanly with newer Office users?
Yes for everyday documents, since the file formats are the same. Features added after 2016, such as XLOOKUP, do not work in Excel 2016.
Does Outlook 2016 for Mac work with my email?
It works with standard IMAP and POP accounts. Microsoft no longer supports old Outlook versions on Microsoft 365 mailboxes, so business users on Microsoft 365 should choose a newer suite.
The installer says it cannot run on this Mac. What now?
Your Mac is newer than Office 2016 supports. If you have not redeemed the key, reply to your order email and we will refund it.
Do I need a Microsoft account?
Yes. The key is redeemed to a free Microsoft account, which you then use to download and activate Office. See our Microsoft account guide.
What if activation fails?
Sign in with the account that redeemed the key. Still failing? Reply to your delivery email, and we will help you finish or send a replacement key.
