Mission-critical SQL Server 2022 with no edition caps on cores or memory.
| Edition | Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Enterprise |
| License term | Perpetual, paid once (Software Assurance not included) |
| Compute and memory | Operating system maximum, no edition cap |
| Licensing model | Per core only; no CALs needed |
| Virtualization | Unlimited VMs only with all cores licensed plus SA |
| Activation | Product key in setup or Edition Upgrade |
| Delivery | By email, usually within minutes |
SQL Server 2022 Enterprise is Microsoft’s top database edition, built for workloads that cannot go down and cannot be squeezed into edition limits. This listing is a genuine Enterprise product key. Typed into the Product Key page of SQL Server 2022 setup, it installs the Enterprise edition; entered in Edition Upgrade, it lifts an existing Standard, Evaluation or Developer instance to Enterprise without reinstalling or moving any data.
Enterprise and Standard share the same database engine, T-SQL language and management tools. What changes is scale and resilience: Enterprise uses every core and every gigabyte of memory the operating system offers, adds full Always On availability groups with several readable secondary replicas, and keeps tables available during index maintenance. You buy the key once, with nothing to renew, and it arrives by email together with Microsoft’s download link and our setup guide.
The two editions answer different questions. Standard asks whether your workload fits inside its limits; Enterprise is what you buy when it does not, or when an outage costs more than the license. The table summarizes where they part ways.
| Area | Enterprise (this key) | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Cores per instance | Whatever the OS supports | Lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores |
| Memory for the buffer pool | Whatever the OS supports | Capped at 128 GB |
| Availability groups | Full Always On: multiple secondaries, readable replicas | Basic: two replicas, one database per group |
| Online index operations | ✔ | — |
| Resource Governor | ✔ | — |
| Licensing | Per core only | Per core or Server + CAL |
| Virtualization rights | Unlimited VMs when all physical cores are licensed and covered by SA | Per VM, minimum 4 core licenses each |
If your database runs on one modest server and a short maintenance window is acceptable, the SQL Server 2022 Standard key delivers the same engine for less. Choose Enterprise when the server outgrows 24 cores or 128 GB, or when the business needs failover with readable replicas.
Enterprise is licensed by the core and only by the core; there is no Server + CAL option, and users do not need SQL Server CALs. Core licenses come in 2-core packs, and Microsoft requires at least 4 core licenses for each physical processor, or for each virtual machine when you license VMs one by one.
Virtualization is where buyers most often over-assume. Running an unlimited number of SQL Server VMs on a host is a Software Assurance (or subscription) benefit that applies when every physical core of the host is licensed with Enterprise. A one-time key like this one does not include Software Assurance, so it does not by itself grant unlimited virtualization. Microsoft’s SQL Server 2022 licensing guide describes the rules for licensing individual VMs, and we are happy to talk your scenario through before you buy.
How much does an Enterprise license cost? It depends on the number of cores you must cover. The current price of this key sits at the top of this page; for a multi-processor host, add up the cores first and contact us if you need help working out the total.
Yes, and without reinstalling. Run setup from SQL Server 2022 media, open Maintenance › Edition Upgrade in the SQL Server Installation Center, enter this Enterprise key and pick the instance. Setup changes the edition in place; databases, logins and jobs stay exactly where they were, and the instance restarts with the Enterprise limits removed. The same route converts a 180-day Evaluation installation or a Developer instance into a licensed Enterprise server.
An in-place upgrade from SQL Server 2016, 2017 or 2019 runs through Installation › Upgrade from a previous version of SQL Server, where you enter the 2022 Enterprise key. For less risk, many teams build a new 2022 instance and restore their backups onto it instead; backups from those versions restore directly to SQL Server 2022. With availability groups you can also add a 2022 replica and fail over to it, keeping downtime to minutes.
Microsoft supports SQL Server 2022 on Windows Server 2016 or any newer release, as well as on several Linux distributions. For an Enterprise deployment, plan the host as carefully as the database:
| Planning point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Host operating system | Windows Server 2022 or 2025; Datacenter if the host will run many VMs |
| Processor | x64; count every physical core you will license for SQL Server |
| Memory | Size to your working set; Enterprise can use all the memory the OS supports |
| Storage | Separate fast volumes for data, transaction logs and tempdb |
| Network | Low-latency links between availability group replicas |
Hosts carrying many SQL Server VMs are usually licensed with Windows Server 2025 Datacenter or Windows Server 2022 Datacenter for their unlimited Windows VM rights. Our guide to Windows Server Standard vs Datacenter explains when the extra cost pays off.
You pay once and SQL Server 2022 Enterprise stays licensed for that instance permanently, cumulative updates included. Microsoft supports SQL Server 2022 with mainstream updates until January 11, 2028 and with security updates until January 11, 2033. Because Software Assurance is not part of this purchase, a move to a later SQL Server version would need a new license.

Still deciding? Our guide covers SQL Server 2022 licensing explained.
Your Enterprise key arrives in a single email with Microsoft’s download link and our guide. Pick the route that matches your environment.
A “key not valid” message usually means the media is not SQL Server 2022 or the key picked up extra spaces when pasted. Edition Upgrade must be run on the server that hosts the instance, from SQL Server 2022 media. For availability groups, upgrade secondary replicas before the primary. If anything still blocks you, send a reply to the delivery email and we will complete the activation together.

Does the job perfectly. The key took a little while to arrive, maybe 20 minutes, but it showed up. Does exactly what it says on the tin.
No complaints at all — everything worked as described. Much cheaper than going through Microsoft, and it’s completely legit. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Will definitely come back when I need another licence.
The key landed in my inbox within a few minutes of paying. Activated without a hitch. Everything validated fine. Already recommended it to a colleague.
Would recommend this to anyone looking for a cost-effective licence. No issues at all with activation. Smooth process.
Got the activation code almost instantly — no waiting around. All the features I needed are there and working fine.
