This is a genuine SQL Server 2022 Standard product key. You enter it on the Product Key page of the SQL Server 2022 setup wizard (or in Edition Upgrade on an existing installation), and setup installs or converts the instance to the licensed Standard edition. Unlike the free Express and Developer editions, Standard is licensed for production use with no 10 GB database cap, so it is the edition most small and mid-size companies run their ERP, accounting, CRM and line-of-business databases on.
The key is a one-time purchase. There is no subscription and no yearly renewal, and the edition keeps running permanently on the server you install it on. Along with the key, your order email carries the official Microsoft download link and our installation guide. Because SQL Server activates during setup rather than through an online activation server, the key also works on servers that are isolated from the internet.
SQL Server 2022 is the version Microsoft calls its most Azure-enabled release so far, but most of its improvements matter just as much on a single on-premises server:
For most single-server workloads, Standard is enough. The decision comes down to the size of the machine and how much downtime you can tolerate. Standard uses up to 24 cores and 128 GB of buffer pool memory, which comfortably serves the databases of a typical small or mid-size business. Enterprise removes those caps and adds the high-availability and online-maintenance features that 24/7 systems depend on.
| Capability | SQL Server 2022 Standard | SQL Server 2022 Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Compute per instance | Lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores | Operating system maximum |
| Buffer pool memory | 128 GB | Operating system maximum |
| High availability | Basic availability groups (two replicas, one database each), two-node failover clusters | Always On availability groups with multiple, readable secondaries |
| Index maintenance | Offline index rebuilds | Online index operations |
| Licensing models | Per core or Server + CAL | Per core only |
| Virtualization | License each VM (4-core minimum) | Unlimited VMs only with all physical cores licensed plus Software Assurance |
If your server has more than 24 cores, needs more than 128 GB for caching data, or must stay online while indexes are rebuilt, look at the SQL Server 2022 Enterprise key. Otherwise Standard delivers the same database engine, the same T-SQL and the same management tools for a much lower license cost.
SQL Server Standard can be licensed in two ways, and the right one depends on how many people use the database:
You can see what this key costs at the top of this page. Before you order, count the cores in your server (or VM) and the people who will use the database, and contact us if you are unsure which licensing model your deployment needs. For virtual machines, Microsoft’s SQL Server 2022 licensing guide sets additional conditions, so check it before licensing individual VMs.
Two editions of SQL Server 2022 are free, and both have clear limits. Express may be used in production but caps each database at 10 GB and uses only a small amount of memory and compute (the lesser of 1 socket or 4 cores). Developer has every Enterprise feature but is licensed for development and testing only, never for production. Once a production database outgrows Express, or you need SQL Server Agent jobs, larger memory and proper high availability, Standard is the usual next step.
Yes. SQL Server 2022 is supported on Windows Server 2016 and newer, including 2019, 2022 and 2025, as well as Windows 10 and Windows 11 for smaller or test installations. It also runs on supported Linux distributions and in containers.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended for production |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows Server 2016, Windows 10 (1607) or later; supported Linux | Windows Server 2022 or 2025 |
| Processor | x64, 1.4 GHz | 2.0 GHz or faster, 4+ cores |
| Memory | 1 GB | 4 GB or more, sized to your data |
| Disk space | 6 GB for setup | Separate SSD volumes for data, logs and tempdb |
| Framework | .NET Framework 4.7.2 (Windows) | Same |
Need the server operating system as well? A Windows Server 2025 Standard 16 Core license covers a typical database host, and Windows Server 2022 Standard remains a solid choice for existing environments.
The license is perpetual for SQL Server 2022 Standard: you pay once and the instance stays licensed for as long as you run it, including every cumulative update Microsoft releases for SQL Server 2022. It does not include Software Assurance, so upgrades to a future SQL Server version, license mobility and the SA virtualization rights are not part of this purchase. Microsoft provides mainstream support for SQL Server 2022 until January 11, 2028 and extended security support until January 11, 2033, which gives a new deployment many years of updates.

Still deciding? Our guide covers SQL Server 2022 licensing explained.
Everything arrives in one email: the SQL Server 2022 Standard key, Microsoft’s official download link and our guide. Follow the scenario below that fits your server.
If setup says the key is invalid, make sure you are running SQL Server 2022 media, not 2019 or a newer release, and that the key was pasted without spaces. A Standard key cannot activate Enterprise, and an Edition Upgrade from Evaluation or Developer can fail if a database uses Enterprise-only features. If setup still refuses the key, answer the delivery email and a support agent will work through it with you.
